Taiwan's National Clean Up Day
I volunteered to lead a hike again this year for Taiwan's National Clean Up Day, organized by Taiwan Adventure Outings. (TAO)

We went to the same location as last year, the Pingxi Bat Caves. These trails are seldomly used and they were quite overgrown. We (and by we I mean me since I was the one leading the group) lost the trail once or twice. We did make it to the lower bat cave but took a miss of the upper bat cave as it's not as accessible. The amount of lanterns in the area was a lot less than last year. Either the locals are doing a great job of regularly cleaning up or the lanterns aren't blowing in that direction anymore.

Next year, I will scout out a different location where we can put all of the very generous volunteers (there were about twenty of us) to better use! It was a very fun day out with a great group! Smiles all around!

Less fallen lanterns on the Bat Cave trails this year but we pulled out everything within reach

No waterfall swim would be complete without a can of 台灣啤酒

May Randomness ...

Life in the fast lane — at Dahu Park Pool
The month of May has flown by! It's almost over and according to my blog, I've done very little. Ha!

The plum rains have been strong and plentiful this year. They have been keeping me off of the trails and sometimes out of the water!

I am back to hitting the pool a few mornings each week and being back in the water has been wonderful! The water is icy cold which is just how I like it! Tends to keep a lot of swimmers out of the pool which brings zero complaints from me. I love uninterrupted workouts in my own lane!

Rainy weekends in the kitchen: my first attempt at an apple crisp without any oats which was delicious

We held our annual speech contest on June 11th

Best. Pool. Ever.

Huangdidian (皇帝殿) ridge hike in Shiding (石碇)
The weather in Taipei has been unpredictable as of late. The forecasts say one thing but the weather does quite the opposite. It's challenging to make plans these days, especially when one of the plans involves a long ridge hike.

Our first attempt was rained out. Our second attempt was canceled one day prior because the forecast showed an 80-90% chance of rain. On the day of the event we did not see one drop of rain. Not one. I was slightly annoyed.

Our third attempt was this trip pictured here. The forecast said there was a 20% chance of rain for the entire day so we figured we'd be good to go. Ha! We got rained on for half of the hike. It's so frustrating!

I was leading a group of experienced hikers so we decided to take the route as it came. I've done this hike many times before but never in the rain. There are several metal ladders to climb and many spots where one needs to walk along narrow ridges with only the support of ropes. The rock itself was not nearly as slippery as I imagined it would be and I won't hestitate in the future to go after a rainy day.

This hike is one of the more popular day hikes near Taipei City and on a nice day, it can be very crowded. There are a number of sections along the hike where hikers need to go one at a time so when you get two groups needing to cross paths, it can take some time. We completed the hike in 4.5 hours as we mostly had the trails to ourselves.

The Taipei Hikers had a wonderful day out with smiles all around! We finished the hike wet from the rain, sweaty from the workout and muddy from almost head to toe!

A rainy but lovely five hour ridge hike — at Huangdidian (皇帝殿)

One of five ladders that needed to be climbed

Love these roots!
